Meet the Dogs

Agate

Agate

Agate is from the Sasha/Arrow 2016 Minnesota Rocks and Minerals litter and is one of NINE littermates. Agate's beautiful copper coloring made her puppy name the most appropriate. Being the most laid back of her littermates, you'll find her sprawled out on the couch during the off season. She is rarely naughty and has a very old soul for such a young puppy. Her training in harness in the form of Canicross hiking began at 9 weeks old. This girl is a natural and she took to running in the team her first season like a pro.

Position: Sled Dog in Training

Akai

Akai

Akai is from the Irish/Ilo 2012 litter and is among the pups we affectionately call the Hooligans. Akai's name came from the Sawtooth Mountain Wolf Pack. Being the most outgoing and people oriented of his litter, Akai was the first one to greet visitors to the kennel, as a puppy. He voices his concern if he isn't included in the goings on to make sure you haven't forgotten him or when stopped on the trail. He just wants to keep moving! He routinely runs next to his brother Wyakin and they make the perfect team pair.

Breed: Hedlund Husky with a dash of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 12/10/2012
Position: Team, Wheel or Point

Ari

Ari

Ari originated with Kim Fitzgerald of Mush Knik Networking and came to us in August of 2010, at the age of five. He is Phoenix's brother and half brother to the Hooligans. Ari was given his new name for his new life and in an old Norse language, "Ari" means Fast Flying "Eagle". He is a very attentive boy and did have fear-based tendencies when he arrived, with some other dogs. His new name is meant to remind him to be strong, regal and honorable to avoid those tendencies. He has an intense drive and never-ending solid "pull". He is a precious gift to the kennel.

Update - Ari is now retired and living with Wayha, a Tuloon/Bazil 2007 puppy, with whom he grew up, in the lap of luxury. They have a sunroom of their own, a large house with a wonderful human family and a large fenced yard. They go on car rides and walks daily and especially like just hanging out on the couch.

Update - Ari passed away in late 2016 after living the retired life of luxury for several months, due to cancer. His smile and eccentric nature will be greatly missed.

Arrow

Arrow

Arrow is from the Topa/Oken 2011 litter and is one of seven beautiful, brilliant puppies! (We're not biased.) His namesake is the place where we call home; the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota. He was the only male in the litter. He's a super smart and eager-to-please boy that is sweet as can be. At 10 weeks old, we could no longer walk with he and his sisters on leash because they pulled far too hard! We placed little harnesses on them and they were naturals. Arrow is a natural leader. Arrow sired his first litter of eight, in the kennel with Rayna, in November of 2014. His kids Zuli and Tikan are an exciting addition to our kennel while the remaining pups were adopted by like-minded folks who have now become members of our extended furry family. He sired another litter with Sasha (Zimbi/Q) in 2016 and four of his kids from this litter(Minnesota Rocks and Minerals Litter) remain here at Points Unknown - Gunflint, Jasper, Shale, Agate.

Blue

Blue

Blue is from our 2002 Traditional Alaskan Husky litter between Zulu and Jesse. She is the sister to Bazil, Klaus and Sweet Pea. She has spent the last nearly eleven years placed in a different kennel and we are extremely happy to be able to provide her with the very best retirement home we can. in the winter of 2014-2015, she surprised us by letting us know she absolutely wanted to run in harness with the team. By the end of the season, she was slowing down just a tad but this girl put 100% of what she had into running. When she's ready to retire, she'll let us know!

Update - Blue's body decided to retire in the fall of 2015 at 13 years old, although her head was still very much in the game! She has been kept busy patrolling the large enclosures and spending time with her brother, Klaus, in the house.

Update - Our sweet Blue passed away a short time after her brother Klaus, in the fall of 2016 due to a stroke. Such a sweet, goofy soul; she will be greatly missed.

Griffin

Griffin

Griffin is out of Points Unknown's Chetan at Stardancer Historical Freight Dogs and our Phoenix. He and his sister, Terra, are the first ever puppies born through frozen surgical artificial insemination in our Hedlund Husky Preservation Project. Frozen Phoenix was flown to Alaska approximately 63 days prior to their birth and the rest is history! Griffin has many of his father's amazing qualities with a dash of naughtiness. He's very laid back and gentle and, even as a puppy, did well with our very young and older guests. Being eager-to-please and extremely focused during our canicross hikes, it's no mistake that he has become a valued Points Unknown team member who could pull the weight of the sled all by himself.

Breed: Deep Line Hedlund with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 09/30/2014
Position: Leader in training, versatile sled dog

Gunflint

Gunflint

Gunflint is among the four puppies from the Sasha/Arrow 2016 Minnesota Rocks and Minerals litter that remained here at Points Unknown. He is the largest, most exuberant, and the most vocal of all of his eight littermates. Being just as eager-to-please as his papa Arrow and grandpapa Oken, he thrives at obedience training and will, no doubt, make an excellent leader in the team someday. His work ethic is outstanding and for a young dog, he has extreme focus and drive in the team.

Illy

Illy

Illy is short for Illiamna which is the region in Alaska where the Hedlund Huskies originated. Illy is Aise's litter mate, coming from Uktousa Kennel in New Hampshire. Tumac, a Points Unknown Tuloon/McKenzie 2009 pup is her father and Daisy, sister to our Journey, is her mother. Illy is a beautiful big girl that has many of the ideal Hedlund traits from the Malamute side of the Hedlund line. She was an independent pup that was very focused on the task at hand. At puppy class, she just wanted to get on with things and not wait around. She is a talker, just like her Aunt Topa and has something to say about everything we ask of her. She gets along with everyone in the kennel and while she took a while to mature in harness, the light bulb switched on and she became a very reliable worker.

Breed: Hedlund Husky/Bush Trap Line Alaskan
Birthdate: 11/27/2010
Position: Versatile Team

Ilo

Ilo

Ilo joined us at Points Unknown in June of 2010 and comes from Kim Fitzgerald, the founder of the Hedlund Husky Preservation Project and Mush Knik Networking. Illo is our Phoenix and Ari's sire, as well as the sire to the Hooligan litter.  Being the happiest dog we've ever met, he wags his entire body to greet us and it puts a smile on our faces every time. We were so excited that he joined the Points Unknown family and he has indeed proven to be a great asset to our family and team! Ilo is currently in semi retirement, preferring the house to his kennel and going on shorter runs.

Update - Ilo is now completely retired, living the life of luxury, in a home nearby, with the most loving humans. We get to visit him often.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: Fall of 2003
Position: Versatile Leader

Irish

Irish

Irish is from the recent Topa/Oken 2011 litter and is the spitting image of her papa Oken.  Irish's name is derived from the road on which we live in the northwoods of Minnesota; Irish Creek Road. She's also the dam to the 2012 Hooligans litter with Ilo. She is a hot ticket, this one! She is independent and inquisitive. Being wicked smart, she was the star of her obedience class and is becoming one of the star leaders here at Points Unknown.

Birthdate: 11/20/2011
Position: Versatile Leader

Jasper

Jasper

Jasper is one of the four pups from the Sasha/Arrow 2016 Minnesota Rocks and Minerals litter that remains here at Points Unknown. This puppy has the thoughtful, kind and calm personality of the Hedlund line with a tiny bit of naughtiness from the Zulu line. Those eyes look right into your soul. His puppy harness training revealed a hard instinctual desire to pull. A tad of aloofness may mean that we'll need to convince him that we know the direction we'd like to travel down the trail and that it isn't up to him necessarily but that will come in time. His first season in harness proved Jasper to be a willing team participant with some interest in learning how to lead.

Breed: Half Hedlund Husky/Half Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 01/09/2016
Position: Sled Dog in Training

JitterBug

JitterBug

JitterBug is from the Topa/Oken 2011 litter. She and her sister Misquah are very unique in appearance and had blue coats and blue eyes as young puppies. JitterBug is one of the most easy going dogs in her litter and gets along well with just about every one in the kennel. She is her sister Salsa's keeper, making sure she doesn't get herself into trouble. JitterBug came back to use in the early Spring of 2016 and since then, she has evolved into a valuable, versatile team member here at Points Unknown.

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 11/20/2011
Position: Versatile Leader

Journey

Journey

Journey is out of McKenzie and Cranberry. Cranberry is an outcross from a bush trapline team. She and her four litter mates were born on May 31, 2007. She joined Points Unknown Kennel in early August of that year when we made the "Journey" to Alaska to bring her home. She was an independent and confident pup and we knew she would make an excellent leader with proper training and that she did! She isn't the least bit daunted by open country leading on an expansive lake and enjoys every minute of it!

Breed: Half Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: 05/31/07
Position: Versatile Leader

Kamotz

Kamotz (Motzi)

Kamotz is one of the Hooligans out of Irish/Ilo 2012. His name came from the Sawtooth Mountain Wolf Pack and means "free spirit". Being one of only two black puppies in the Hedlund line thus far, he appears to be a throwback to the Joe Redington Sr. lineage that was introduced into the Hedlund line in the early 1990s. He has a solid build and a mild temperament and reminds us so much of his grandpa Oken. He seeks approval and direction which is something we like to see in our young leaders.

Breed: Hedlund Husky with a dash of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 12/10/2012
Position: Versatile Team

Kinuinak

Kinuinak (Newy)

Kinuinak is one of the four pups from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter that remained at Points Unknown. The name Kinuinak translates to "Peace" in Yupik. Being independent, intelligent, soulful and inuitive, she is Hedlund Husky through and through. Her pull instinct shines brightly through and she is much happier demonstrating her canicross pulling skills in her puppy harness than she is just sitting still at our "Meet and Greet" events for guests. Her first run in harness showed us her intense desire to lead the team. Now, to master manners.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky with a sprinkle of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 06/24/2016
Position: Sled puppy in training

Kitsu

Kitsune (Kitsu)

Kitsu was the first of the four pups from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter to pick Linda and decide to stay at Points Unknown. The name Kitsune means "fox" in Japanese. She is intense, yet playful and mamma Topa appears to be grooming her favorite in the litter for big things when she grows up. Kitsu, like most Hedlund Huskies, watches others "do" and then does. She's very visual and picks up on things quickly. She appeared to be a natural when introduced to her puppy harness and when put to the test on her first run in the team, she showed intense focus and excellent pulling abilities.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky with a sprinkle of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 06/24/2016
Position: Sled puppy in training

Klaus

Klaus

Klaus just looked like a Klaus. Zulu is his father and he is a brother to Sweet Pea, Blue and Bazil. Klaus has become an excellent leader like his dad. His open country leader skills are amazing and he turns on a dime, again just like dad. When in lead, he never stops pulling and rarely looks back except for the occasional glance to make sure he is doing what was asked. In harness he is quite serious and has no time for fun and games. Off the trail he is quirky, goofy and always trying to get his sister, Sweet Pea, to play. Klaus is in the midst of retirement. Although he can go out on short runs, his body doesn't seem to want him to go much further. His mind is still ALL IN!

Update - Klaus decided to retire in the fall of 2014. He enjoys roaming free in our big enclosures and taking walks with us and the house dogs. What he loves most is coming in every evening for some one-on-one time and a peanut butter Kong.

Update - My right hand man and sweet soul of a guy passed away in the summer of 2016. Sadly, his body was beginnig to fail him. Such heart and soul. He will be deeply missed.

Breed: Zulu line Alaskan Husky
Birthdate: 08/05/02
Position: Open Country Leader now furry angel

McKenzie

McKenzie

McKenzie is one of the foundation Hedlund males and sire to Journey, Topa and White Feather.. He joined  Points Unknown the beginning of April 2007. In early 2010 he retired and now lives with Wayha, a 2007 Tuloon/Bazil puppy in the home of friends living nearby so we get to see him often. He is a sweet boy that gets along with the other dogs, doesn't make a sound and is quite the gentleman . He was a cherished part of the Points Unknown team and did an excellent job for us and now is living the life of retirement luxury with friends.

Update - McKenzie passed at the age of 14 after having a long and happy life. He left a special and very important legacy and will be missed.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: 08/01/2001
Position: Lead

Misquah

Misquah

Misquah is from the Topa/Oken 2011 litter. She has a very unique look and personality to boot! She was born with an almost blue slate colored coat that has been changing to include some liver colored tones. Her eyes were blue until a few months old then changed to hazel and now they are a piercing yellow. She is the ring leader of the three puppies that remained at Points Unknown kennel. Misquah is a social butterfly and was a very busy puppy who just had stuff to do! The names for this recent litter came from the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota where we relocated in 2013. Misquah is derived from the Misquah Hills which exist in our area. Misquah is Ojibwa for "red rock outcroppings". Misquah has become a talented wheel dog and insists that she is the boss in the kennel despite the humans thinking otherwise. This sweet girl is eager-to-please.

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 11/20/2011
Position: Versatile Team, Point and Wheel

Oken

Oken

Oken is from the Tuloon/Bazil litter 2007. He is a Zulu grandson and a nephew to Sweet Pea, Klaus, Bazil and Blue. His name came about while driving on the Gunflint Trail and noticing a sign for a place called Okontoe that gives sleigh rides. A little modification and you have Oken! This long-legged guy is extremely attentive, sweet and playful. He has a bit of the cautiousness from the Hedlund line and if everything checks out, he's right in the middle of it all. He loves to explore and you'll find him with the group for a bit then off on his own mission he goes. He has a nice dense winter coat. Oken has long legs and a long body, taking after both lines. When tried in harness for very short puppy runs, Oken proved to be a solid puller with a willingness to be up in lead. As for being eager to please, you don't get any better than Oken! He developed quickly into one of THE main leaders in the kennel and is unhappy to run any other position.

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 09/26/07
Position: Open Country Leader

Phoenix

Phoenix

Phoenix means "a person or thing so excellent as to have no equal or match". We thought this fitting of a foundation male of our Hedlund Husky line. Phoenix arrived from Alaska at the beginning of February 2006. He was an independent pup but made eye contact often as if looking for direction. Quite laid back, he is accepting of new dogs, new people and new situations. He seems very much like an "old soul". At 10 months old when put up in lead, Phoenix showed all the signs of being a great leader. In 2007 he proved himself in lead and has been one of our main leaders ever since. Open country soon became second nature for him. Phoenix is the papa to Ryden, Griffin and Terra.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: 11/18/05
Position: Open Country Leader

Q

Q

Q is from the Tuloon/Bazil litter of 2007. He has spent nearly six and a half years away from us, placed in a different kennel as a puppy and now has found his way back to us. We loved this boy from the start and are happy he has returned. Being calm, quiet and mild tempered, he fit in right away and is a true asset to Points Unknown.

Update - Q, at 9 years old, was adopted out to someone who has become an extended member of the Points Unknown family. He spends a lot of time lounging in the house and large fenced yard in between canicross adventures in the mountains and woods.

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 09/26/07
Position: Versatile Team, Point, Wheel

Rayna

Rayna

Rayna means "Queen" and that she is. She's was a beautiful, BIG puppy that came to us in November of 2011 from Andy Bassich's line in the Eagle, Alaska area through Sirus Sled Dogs in Fairbanks. We can't be more pleased. She is laid back, independent but cuddly, all at the same time. In harness, Rayna is cool, calm and collected. Being the biggest female in our kennel, she weighs in at over 75lbs and is 30 inches at the shoulder. Rayna was bred with Arrow and had a litter of eight puppies on Thanksgiving of 2014. Zuli and Tikan are the pups that remained with Points Unknown while the others were adopted by like-minded people who have now become extended members of our furry family. Rayna is one of the kennel's main leaders.

Breed: Bassich line Alaskan
Birthdate: 09/23/2011
Position: Leader

Ryden

Ryden

Ryden's name came about when trying to stick with our recent Arrowhead of Minnesota theme. Ryden's Border Store is, you got it, right on the border of Minnesota and Canada and within 15 miles of our Irish Creek Homestead. Being a Phoenix puppy, he's very laid back, super friendly and eager-to-please. His now-and-again "spiciness" comes from his mother, Sasha's side. Sasha is our Wimzi's sister and Q's daughter. Ryden's extreme overbite makes him a designated teacher in the Point Unknown kennel. It's his job to show our guests that it doesn't matter how different you are, what you look like or what ails you, you can still rise to great heights. Ryden has the sweetest personality and is an excellent sled dog. He is proving to a very attentive and talented leader!

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu Line Alaska
Birthdate: 09/01/2012
Position: Versatile Leader

Salsa

Salsa

Salsa is from our 2011 Topa/Oken litter. She came back to us with her sister, JitterBug, in early Spring of 2016 and has settled in nicely. She is more concerned about things than JitterBug so relies on her sister to give her the most "up to date information" in the kennel. She loves to play games with her humans and is just as quirky and goofy as her mama Topa. Since her return, she has become a valuable and versatile hard-working team member here at Points Unknown.

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 11/20/2011
Position: Team, Wheel or Point

Shale

Shale

Shale is from our 2016 Minnesota Rocks and Minerals Litter out of Sasha and Arrow. Being vocal from birth, she has a very sweet voice and doesn't hesistate to tell her thoughts on things in the kennel. She's got a signature Hedlund Husky personality; calm, thoughtful and mild mannered. She has shown us during her early harness training that she has the drive and focus it takes to be an excellent sled dog. Always checking in with us, we see that she also has the eager-to-please traits of her papa Arrow. Her first season in harness proved to us that she will likely become another outstanding leader like her papa.

Breed: Half Hedlund Husky/Half Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 01/09/2016
Position: Sled dog in Training

Siri

Sirius (Siri)

Siri came to us from Sirius Sled Dogs  in Fairbanks Alaska and is out of their Isolde and Stardancer Historical Freight Dogs' Orion.  She was brought into the kennel initially to add genetic diversity to our lines and, of course, she is much more than that! This little girl is firecracker smart and so laid back. She is an old soul in a small puppy package. For the first monthn after her arrival at 8 weeks old, Linda carried her around the house with her wherever she went. When she got too big to carry, Siri just decided she'd follow Linda around instead. A strong bond was created and we're looking forward to seeing how that will translate to her leader training once she is old enough to run in the team. During puppy harness walks she has impressed us with her fantastic instinct to pull and we can't wait to see how she does in the team once old enough.

Breed: Stardancer Freight Line
Birthdate: 11/05/2016
Position: Sled Puppy in Training

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea is Zulu’s daughter and a sister to Klaus, Bazil and Blue. She lives up to her name but don’t let this sweet girl fool you. She has been known to give even the biggest of dogs a piece of her mind if annoyed! At the same time, she is the most patient and loving teacher to all of the puppies that have come into the kennel. She raises them like her own. She is a serious worker on the trail. In the off season, she would be happy to play the role of a couch potato. We just can't resist her "I'll do anything for you" look. Sweet Pea decided in the fall of 2013 that she no longer wanted to work in harness. She's rather stick to her puppy nanny duties and, then, of course, being a house dog is tough work so there's no time for anything else!

Update - Our dear sweet girl passed away on July 2, 2014. She will be greatly missed. Please visit this link to view her tribute.

Breed: Zulu line Alaskan Husky
Birthdate: 08/05/02
Position: Versatile Sled Dog now Furry Angel

Terra

Terra

Terra is out of Points Unknown's Chetan at Stardancer Historical Freight Dogs and our Phoenix. She and her brother, Griffin, are the first ever puppies born through frozen surgical artificial insemination in our Hedlund Husky Preservation Project. Frozen Phoenix was flown to Alaska approximately 63 days prior to their birth and the rest is history! Terra is an absolute china doll with a tomboy side. Her smile goes from ear to ear and she's the most attentive of any of the 2014 puppies. Having a tad of her great grandma Tuloon's stubborness, I anticipate her being an excellent leader that I will have to work to convince that I'm the one in charge.

Breed: Deep Line Hedlund with a Dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 09/30/14
Position: Leader in Training

Tikan

Tikan

Tikan is out of Calico's Rayna at Points Unknown and our Arrow. Her litter is an outcross, to bring genetic diversity into the kennel and to help increase the size of our females. So far so good! The puppies in this litter of eight, have been consistently the largest we have ever had. She and her sister, Zuli, that also remained with Points Unknown, are as big as mamma Rayna. Tikan is a thoughtful and sensitive soul who is so very laid back and sweet. She absolutely loves to be in laps and goes out of her way to make sure you get a good face washing. She's all heart and soul and puts 120% into her job as a sled dog and leader.

Breed: Half Bassich line/Nearly Half Hedlund with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 11/27/14
Position: Leader in Training

Topa Topa

Topa Topa

Topa Topa is from the Tuloon/McKenzie 2009 litter. The significance of her name comes from the founder of the Hedlund Husky Preservation program who is a dear friend of Points Unknown. Kim Fitzgerald grew up in California and the spent the most formative years of her life on her uncle's ranch overlooking the Topa Topa mountain range. Topa is a sweet girl and her eager-to-please personality makes her easy to work with and train. She loves visitors and makes sure that each get a chance to have her in their lap. In the fall of 2010 she began her leader training. Topa keeps her line tight and pushes ahead, looking back on occasion for direction. She is a foundation female of the Points Unknown kennel, having been bred to Oken and producing Arrow, Misquah, Irish, Salsa and JitterBug. Her last litter was born in June of 2016 with Griffin as the sire; one final litter of outstanding puppies! Remaining in our kennel are Varg, Newy, Kitsu and YaaBaa.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: 06/27/2009
Position: Versatile Leader

Tuloon

Tuloon

Tuloon is a deep line Hedlund Husky and is the matriarch of the Points Unknown kennel. Her name came about while listening to a small town Alaska radio station on the trip to bring her home. The announcer was reading messages from loved ones to people living in the bush. This particular greeting was to someone’s “Tuloon Child”. It just stuck! She sustained a leg trauma as a pup requiring stainless steel pins through her leg attached to graphite rods on each side of her leg for stability. Extensive therapy was needed. She made a full recovery and doesn't hesitate to voice her discontent if she thinks she might be left behind on a run. She bounds through deep snow like a deer and breaks a good trail for a girl her size. She produced some amazing puppies in both her 2007 and 2009 litters that include Oken, Zala, Zodiak, Q,  Topa and White Feather that are here in the Points Unknown kennel. She has many grandpuppies and great grandpuppies in the kennel. Tuloon is a main leader in one of the Points Unknown teams.

Update - Tuloon made the easy decision to retire in the fall of 2015. Her leg injury received as a puppy caught up with her, making it difficult to complete runs without discomfort. She doesn't seem to mind ruling the roost in the house and is a frequent rider on trips into town.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: 06/16/04
Position: Open Country Leader

Varg

Varg

Varg is from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter and is a very nice mix of his papa Griffin and grandpa Phoenix. His name means "wolf" in Swedish. As eager-to-please as his half brother, Arrow, Varg is the first to greet us and is anxious to see what we'd like him to do. Being the class clown, he always makes us laugh. He does become very serious, however, when we put him in his puppy harness and he has the opportunity to do a little puppy pulling. His first run in harness showed us that he remains serious about pulling!

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky with a sprinkle of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 06/24/2016
Position: Sled puppy in Training

White Feather

White Feather

White Feather is from the Tuloon/McKenzie 2009 litter. Her name has personal significance to Linda as White Feather was born at a time when the wildlife lake on which the kennel used to sit had been populated with a number of white feathered birds, more so than in years past. Also, feathers have found their way to Linda over the years which have accumulated into a large collection, making the name White Feather the perfect choice. This girl is a social butterfly and is extremely active, always looking for something new to do. What a perfect personality for a working sled dog! She has an even balance between independence and eager-to-please personality traits. She is one of the main leaders in the Points Unknown kennel.

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky
Birthdate: 06/27/2009
Position: Open Country Leader

Wimzi

Wimzi

Wimzi with a "Z" carries on her Grandpa Zulu's genes in the Points Unknown kennel. There is even a little tiny bit of Hedlund Husky in there as our Tuloon is Wimzi's grandmother on her father, Q's side. Wimzi is a super confident firecracker of a pup and is proving to be very intelligent and anxious to learn new things. Wimzi enjoys working in the team but is a bit too distracted, at times, up in lead. She enjoys life to the fullest and notices every little thing on the trail.

Update - Wimzi was adopted by like-minded folks who also adopted two of the Rayna/Arrow 2014 puppies. She is a beloved house/sled pet and mentor to the pups.

Wyakin

Wyakin

Wyakin is one of the Hooligans out of the Irish/Ilo 2012 litter. Wyakin got his name from the Sawtooth Mountain Wolf pack and it means "Spirit Guide". Being a kind and sensitive soul, Wyakin reminds us of his brother Phoenix at this age, a true Hedlund Husky personality. His size is noteworthy as he is significantly larger than his brothers and his paws are HUGE.  Wyakin was a bit stubborn during his introduction to his job but quickly became the go-to guy when we wanted someone steady and calm. His running partner is his brother Akai and they make the perfect team pair.

Breed: Hedlund Husky with a dash of our Zulu line

YaaBaa

YaaBaa Teeshay (YaaBaa)

YaaBaa was the final of four from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter that picked us and decided to remain at Points Unknown. He is named after an Athabaskan culural hero that was present at the beginning of time, sent to bring humans and animals together in harmony. His name suits him because he is the very biggest marshmallow, loving all people and all dogs. Being as smart as a whip, YaaBaa excels in his puppy socialziation classes and quickly learns new behaviors. His puppy "pull" instinct is exceptional and we look forward to watching him grow. It was obvious that during his first run in harness, he was ABSOLUTELY interested in going NOW and didn't want the gangline to hold him back. He will be in extreme need of manners training but once training to be calm in harness, we know he'll be an outstanding go-to, versatile team member like  his nephew Wyakin who was nearly as bad about manners on his first few runs. (Yikes!)

Zala

Zala

Zala is from the Tuloon/Bazil 2007 litter. She is a granddaughter to Zulu and a niece to Sweet Pea, Klaus and Blue. Zala's name just came about while trying to find a "Z" name to carry along with the Zulu line. (We made it up!) She is a little firecracker, always on the run. She seems to always make us laugh with her antics. She, like Oken, has long legs and a long body. Her coat is dense and longer than that of her two brothers'. Zala proved to be the most exuberant in harness during our short puppy runs. Like her mom, Tuloon, she bounds through deep snow like a deer. She was meant to be a leader and that is where she spends most of her time. In 2013, she was diagnosed with Panus, an eye disease which is made worse by exposure to bright sunlight. This means that she stays in the house most of the time and especially on days when the sun is very bright. Otherwise, if she'll keep them on, she'll wear her doggles. Zala began to gain weight and slow down in early 2014 and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism later that year. With medication on board, she is now back to her exhuberant self and still one of our leaders!

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan

Position: Versatile Lead

Zodiak

Zodiak

Zodiak is one of three pups that stayed at Points Unknown from the Tuloon/Bazil 2007 litter. He is Zulu's grandson and Sweet Pea, Blue and Klaus' nephew. Zodi's name came about when looking for "Z" names to pass down with the Zulu line. This big guy is very bold, curious and very much a thinker. You wouldn't think a bold puppy would be a mamma's boy, but he is. He is very attached to Linda and gets worried when he thinks I don't see him and aren't giving him enough attention. Zodi has long legs and a more compact body. He and grandpa Zulu have the same facial markings. When being tried in harness on puppy runs he was the most calm of all pups. He pulled hard and when we stopped he laid down and waited. Being in lead seemed to be second nature for him. Zodiak spends a lot of time in lead and is also versatile within the team.

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan

Zola

Zola

Zola came to us from our friends at Uktousa Kennel in New Hampshire. Her sire is our Tumac (Tuloon/McKenzie 2009) and her dam is our Cookqiz (Tuloon/Bazil 2007). She was always the first of her littermates to try new things. This has carried through now that she is living with Points Unknown as she never hesitates to check something out or try something unfamiliar. Zola is an excellent sled dog, being one of the very best pullers in the team and is really excelling in wheel position.

Zuli

Zuli

Zuli is out of Calico's Rayna at Points Unknown and our Arrow. Her litter is an outcross, to bring genetic diversity into the kennel and to help increase the size of our females. So far so good! The puppies in this litter of eight, have been consistently the largest we have ever had. We anticipate that she and her sister, Tikan, that also remained with Points Unknown, will be at least as big as mamma Rayna. Zuli is an absolute firecracker and is as smart as a whip. We noticed this in her even at only a few days old. Being extremely eager-to-please, she has been a joy to train in harness once we can get her to keep her feet on the ground and her tongue in her mouth and not all over your face!

Breed: Half Bassich line/Nearly Half Hedlund with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 11/27/14
Position: Leader in Training

Zulu

Zulu

Zulu came to the kennel at the age of five. What a great name! Zu was a magnificent open country leader. This dog would turn on a dime almost before the command is spoken. Zu had saved the team from open water. He navigated safely through rocky, steep and narrow tree lined trails and he kept the team in line on glare ice. This was an amazing dog. He iwas an affectionate dog and would rather be relaxing by my side than hanging out with the other dogs. There are no words that could do Zulu justice. Zulu fully retired at 12 years old when his arthritis wouldn't allow him to pull in harness more than 100 yards. He didn't seem to miss it though, as long has he could be by my side in the house. Sadly, Zulu passed away in early 2010. Please click here to visit our blog to view his tribute.

Breed: Foundation of the Zulu line

Copper

Copper

Copper's color made his name an obvious choice. This 12lb daschund/poodle mix was found wandering through traffic in a neighborhood in Minneapolis in late 2001. This little three legged guy found his place in our hearts and has been here ever since. He goes on every excursion to the cabin with the sled dogs wearing his little coat and boots. Copper loves the snowmobile ride in as his little head pokes out of  Linda's jacket. Of course, socializing with the sled dogs is not a good idea so he basks in the sun in the corner chair of the cabin, taunting them from afar.

Update - The keeper of our hearts, our sweet little Copper, passed away in February of 2016. He had a full life and passed just around the time he turned 15 years old. Please visit this link to read our tribute to this special being.

Breed: Dachshund/Poodle

Blueberry

Blueberry

Blue came with his name. He was rescued by an organization that found him in a shed in Wisconsin with 17 other small dogs. They were all petrified of people and terribly neglected. His name became Blueberry after thoughts of the Points Unknown cabin in the late summer where Blueberries grow in abundance. This 22lb King Charles Spaniel/Sheltie/Daschund mix has come a long way with his socialization and will happily greet visitors. He is currently doing his part as another Points Unknown Sled Dog Team mascot to help socialize the new puppies.

Update - Sadly, Blueberry passed away unexpectedly in September of 2014. It was a shock to all of us and so difficult to understand. A cancerous tumor took his life. Please click here to read our tribute to this wonderfully sweet boy.

Breed: A nice mix

Sayah

Sayah

Sayah is Persian for "Shadow" and that she is! When looking at her puppy photos, she reminded us so much of our very first Australian Shepherd, Shadow and we fell in love with her instantly. She's taken to her job as mascot well and takes it very seriously. She feels that it is her job to check in with every sled dog each morning and make certain she knows where they are during playgroups as she watches them from the house windows. She's got a path from one end of the house to the other and up the stairs and back again. She's even run on in the team with the sled dogs!  Her main job though, is to be by our sides doing whatever needs to be done around or off the homestead.
