Trap Line Dogs for Subsistence Living
The Alaskan Husky is not a pure breed of dog. It is a mix of a northern breed dog with what the musher chooses to include in that line in order to complete a specific job. Modern day racing dog mushers are adding breeds such as German Pointer for stamina and Greyhound and Suluki Hound for speed.
Years ago these northern breeds were mixed with Irish Wolfhound, St. Bernard and various mixed breeds found in bush villages called “Village Dogs” to create a bigger, stronger and more densely coated dog for subsistence living and trap line teams. There are very few of these old lines alive today. Points Unknown kennel is striving to preserve some of those lines that make the traditional Alaskan Husky.
