Agate

Breed: Half Hedlund Husky/Half Zulu Line Alaskan Husky
Birthdate: 01/09/2016
Position: Leader

Agate – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored by Kelly Smith, the PT Boat Litter & Sundog Tamaskans for 3 months, through June 2020. (Agate is the half sister to one of their litters!). Sponsored by Caitlin Nessner, Logan Respess, Conall the Tamaskan Dog and Kaylee the Lab of Houston, Texas for one month, through July, 2020. Sponsored the Kit & Joe along with Agate’s son Hank and her aunt JitterBug from Montana for ONE YEAR through July 2021

Agate is from the Sasha x Arrow 2016 Minnesota Rocks & Minerals litter and is one of NINE in this litter. Agate’s beautiful copper coloring made her puppy name the most appropriate. Being the most laid back of her littermates, you’ll find her sprawled out on the couch during the off season. She is rarely naughty and had a very old soul, even as a young puppy. She is a natural puller and sled dog. Agate chose Linda early on has “her” person and now they are inseparable.

Arrow

Breed: Hedlund Husky with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 11/20/2011
Position: Leader

Arrow – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for 3 months by Maurice Jongen & Alexandra Martens of Netherlands (They have one of Arrow’s sons, Koda!) AND Sponsored by Kelly Smith, the PT Boat Litter & Sundog Tamaskans for 9 months. (Arrow sired one of their litters!) Sponsored through March of 2021.

Arrow is from the Topa x Oken 2011 litter and is one of seven beautiful, brilliant puppies! (We’re not at all biased!) His namesake is the place where we call home; the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota. He was the only male in the litter. He’s a super smart and eager-to-please boy that is sweet as can be. At 10 weeks old, we could no longer walk with he and his sisters on leash because they pulled far too hard! We placed little harnesses on them and they were naturals. Arrow is a natural leader. Arrow sired his first litter of eight, in the kennel, with Rayna in November of 2014. His kids Zuli and Tikan remained here in the kennel. He sired a second litter at Points Unknown with Sasha in 2016 and three of those kids remain here with us – Agate, Gunflint and Shale.

Castle Danger

Breed: 1/4 Hedlund, 1/4 Bassich (Calico), 1/2 Sno-Trek
Birthdate: 09/03/2017
Position: Leader in Training

Castle Danger – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for one month, through April 2020, by Janine Ramseier of Switzerland. Sponsored by Sonja Birkeland and The Pack Up Artist of Circle Pines, MN through July 15th, 2020. Sponsored by Paula Delfosse & Bob Gounley of Altadena, California for 6 months through February 15th, 2021.

Castle came to us from our friends at Sno-Trek Kennel in Mondovi, Wisconsin. He is out of our Rayna/Arrow’s Gucci and Snow-Trek’s Cooper. Castle is a sweet boy and wants nothing more than to sit on your lap and cuddle except for when we get his training harness out and then he is all business. On his first puppy run with the team, he acted as though he was a seasoned sled dog with intense focus and drive.  His genetics will play an important role in the diversity of the Hedlund line in our kennel and within the Hedlund Husky Preservation Project.

Leader in training, versatile sled dog

Griffin

Breed: Deep Line Hedlund with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 09/30/2014
Position: Leader in training, versatile sled dog

Griffin – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored by Ben & Kira Premack and White Elk Tamaskan for three months, through June 2020. Griffin’s uncle Arrow sired The Scientist litter for White Elk Tamaskan.

Griffin is out of Points Unknown’s Chetan at Stardancer Historical Freight Dogs and our Phoenix. He and his sister, Terra, are the first ever puppies born through frozen surgical artificial insemination in our Hedlund Husky Preservation Project. Frozen Phoenix was flown to Alaska approximately 63 days prior to their birth and the rest is history! Griffin has many of his father’s amazing qualities with a dash of naughtiness. He’s very laid back and gentle and, even as a puppy, did well with our very young and older guests. Being eager-to-please and extremely focused during our canicross hikes, it’s no mistake that he has become a valued Points Unknown team member who could pull the weight of the sled all by himself.

Awesome Wheel Dog with leader potential

Gunflint

Breed: Half Hedlund Husky/Half Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 01/09/2016
Position: Awesome Wheel Dog with leader potential

Gunflint – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored through for ONE YEAR, through March 2021 by Candy Vernetti of California.

Gunflint is among the four puppies from the Sasha/Arrow 2016 Minnesota Rocks and Minerals litter that remained here at Points Unknown. He is the largest, most exuberant, and the most vocal of all of his eight littermates. Being just as eager-to-please as his papa Arrow and grandpapa Oken, he thrives at obedience training and will, no doubt, make an excellent leader in the team someday. His work ethic is outstanding and for a young dog, he has extreme focus and drive in the team.

Leader in training

Kinnikinnick

Breed: 1/4 Hedlund, 1/4 Zulu Line, 1/2 Stardancer Historcial Freight Line
Birthdate: 11/20/2019
Position: Leader in training

Kinnikinnick – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored by Heidi Welchlin of Cary, North Carolina for one month through April 2020. Sponsored by Donna Mankowski of Prior Lake, Minnesota for three months, through July 2020.

Kniknik is from the Siri x Gunflint Native Roots Litter. Despite being only 1/4 Hedlund on paper, his temperament is quintessential Hedlund being very laid back, calm, intuitive and thoughtful. That big fuzzy coat comes from his Aunts Agate and Shale (Gunflint’s sisters). Puppy canicross with this pup proved that the “pull” instinct is very much alive and well. His first winter in the team proved that he wants to and is very capable of being a lead dog. Now for more training.

Leader in training

Kinuinak (Newy)

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky with a sprinkle of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 06/24/2016
Position: Leader in training

Kinuinak (Newy) – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for two months, through June 15th, by Andi & Tom Moffatt of Lauderdale, Minnesota.

Kinuinak is one of the four pups from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter that remained at Points Unknown. The name Kinuinak translates to “Peace” in Yupik. Being independent, intelligent, soulful and inuitive, she is Hedlund Husky through and through. Her pull instinct shines brightly through and she is much happier demonstrating her canicross pulling skills in her puppy harness than she is just sitting still at our “Meet and Greet” events for guests. Her first run in harness showed us her intense desire to lead the team. Now, to master manners.

Leader in training

Kitsune (Kitsu)

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky with a sprinkle of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 06/24/2016
Position: Leader in training

Kitsune (Kitsu) – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for one month by Joshua, Valerie, Evelynn & Abigail Mae Cates through April 2020. Sponsored by Amanda Laugerman of Apple Valley, Minnesota for 3 months, through August 2020 in memory of her husky mix, Emma, that passed way a year and a half ago.

Kitsu was the first of the four pups from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter to pick Linda and decide to stay at Points Unknown. The name Kitsune means “fox” in Japanese. She is intense, yet playful and mamma Topa appears to be grooming her favorite in the litter for big things when she grows up. Kitsu, like most Hedlund Huskies, watches others “do” and then does. She’s very visual and picks up on things quickly. She appeared to be a natural when introduced to her puppy harness and when put to the test on her first run in the team, she showed intense focus and excellent pulling abilities.

Puppy

Oshkagoojin

Breed: 6/8 Sirius Sled Dog/Stardancer Historical Freight Dogs lineage, 1/8 Hedlund Husky, 1/8 Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 12/25/2020
Position: Puppy

Oshka (Oshkagoojin), meaning “New Moon” in Anishinaabemowen, came to us from the Fairbanks, Alaska area. Her sire, Cedar, is a Points Unknown puppy out of Siri x Gunflint. We’ve already tried this puppy in harness on some short canicross hikes and were surprised to see her pulling drive is as intense as her relatives. We’re looking forward to seeing her in harness with the team this fall/winter for the first time. She is a sweet puppy that loves everyone and everything.

Versatile Leader

Ryden

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu Line Alaska
Birthdate: 09/01/2012
Position: Versatile Leader

Ryden – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored by Elizabeth, Anna & Johnathan Monarski of Victoria, Minnesota for three months, through July 15, 2020

Ryden’s name came about when trying to stick with our recent Arrowhead of Minnesota theme. Ryden’s Border Store is, you got it, right on the border of Minnesota and Canada and within 15 miles of our Irish Creek Homestead. Being a Phoenix puppy, he’s very laid back, super friendly and eager-to-please. His now-and-again “spiciness” comes from his mother, Sasha’s side. Sasha is our Wimzi’s sister and Q’s daughter. Ryden’s extreme overbite makes him a designated teacher in the Point Unknown kennel. It’s his job to show our guests that it doesn’t matter how different you are, what you look like or what ails you, you can still rise to great heights. Ryden has the sweetest personality and is an excellent sled dog. He is proving to a very attentive and talented leader!

Leader in Training

Shale

Breed: Half Hedlund Husky/Half Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 01/09/2016
Position: Leader in Training

Shale – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for three months, through June 2020, by Sarah & Anja Wellhausen of Germany. Sponsored by Beatte Wellhausen from Germany for 6 months through December 2020.

Shale is from our 2016 Minnesota Rocks and Minerals Litter out of Sasha and Arrow. Being vocal from birth, she has a very sweet voice and doesn’t hesitate to tell her thoughts on things in the kennel. She’s got a signature Hedlund Husky personality; calm, thoughtful and mild mannered. She has shown us during her early harness training that she has the drive and focus it takes to be an excellent sled dog. Always checking in with us, we see that she also has the eager-to-please traits of her papa Arrow. Her first season in harness proved to us that she will likely become another outstanding leader like her papa.

Leader in Training

Sirius (Siri)

Breed: Stardancer Freight Line
Birthdate: 11/05/2016
Position: Leader in Training

Sirius (Siri) – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for one month, though May 15th, 2020, by Caitlin Nessner, Logan Respess, Conall the Tamaskan Dog & Kaylee the Lab, of Houston, Texas. Sponsored by Kati Steininger of Austria for one month, through June, 2020.

Siri came to us from Sirius Sled Dogs in Fairbanks Alaska and is out of their Isolde and Stardancer Historical Freight Dogs’ Orion.  She was brought into the kennel initially to add genetic diversity to our lines and, of course, she is much more than that! This little girl is firecracker smart and so laid back. She is an old soul in a small puppy package. For the first monthn after her arrival at 8 weeks old, Linda carried her around the house with her wherever she went. When she got too big to carry, Siri just decided she’d follow Linda around instead. A strong bond was created and we’re looking forward to seeing how that will translate to her leader training once she is old enough to run in the team. During puppy harness walks she has impressed us with her fantastic instinct to pull and we can’t wait to see how she does in the team once old enough.

Leader

Tikan

Breed: Half Bassich line/Nearly Half Hedlund with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 11/27/14
Position: Leader

Tikan – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored by Sina Schlottke of Berlin, Germany for one month, through April 2020. Sponsored by Carolin Dudda from Hamburg, Germany for three months through July 2020. Sponsored by Mary Lou Sorensen of Grand Marais, Minnesota for three months, through July 15, 2020.

Tikan is out of Calico’s Rayna at Points Unknown and our Arrow. Her litter is an outcross, to bring genetic diversity into the kennel and to help increase the size of our females. So far so good! The puppies in this litter of eight, have been consistently the largest we have ever had. She and her sister, Zuli, that also remained with Points Unknown, are as big as mamma Rayna. Tikan is a thoughtful and sensitive soul who is so very laid back and sweet. She absolutely loves to be in laps and goes out of her way to make sure you get a good face washing. She’s all heart and soul and puts 120% into her job as a sled dog and leader.

Awesome wheel dog!

YaaBaa Teeshay (YaaBaa)

Breed: Deep line Hedlund Husky with a sprinkle of our Zulu line
Birthdate: 06/24/2016
Position: Awesome wheel dog!

YaaBaa Teeshay (YaaBaa) – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for 3 months through June 2020 and an additional three months through November 2020 by Karen Christopherson and Big Bear Animal Acupuncture of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

YaaBaa was the final of four from the 2016 Topa/Griffin litter that picked us and decided to remain at Points Unknown. He is named after an Athabaskan culural hero that was present at the beginning of time, sent to bring humans and animals together in harmony. His name suits him because he is the very biggest marshmallow, loving all people and all dogs. Being as smart as a whip, YaaBaa excels in his puppy socialziation classes and quickly learns new behaviors. His puppy “pull” instinct is exceptional and we look forward to watching him grow. It was obvious that during his first run in harness, he was ABSOLUTELY interested in going NOW and didn’t want the gangline to hold him back. He will be in extreme need of manners training but once training to be calm in harness, we know he’ll be an outstanding go-to, versatile team member like  his nephew Wyakin who was nearly as bad about manners on his first few runs. (Yikes!)

Zhingwaak

Breed:
Birthdate: 07/30/2022
Position:

Versatile Team, Point, Wheel

Zola

Breed: Hedlund/Zulu line Alaskan
Birthdate: 05/15/2012
Position: Versatile Team, Point, Wheel

Zola – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for a SECOND month by Linda Madland of Leola, Arkansas, through June, 2020

Zola came to us from our friends at Uktousa Kennel in New Hampshire. Her sire is our Tumac (Tuloon/McKenzie 2009) and her dam is our Cookqiz (Tuloon/Bazil 2007). She was always the first of her littermates to try new things. This has carried through now that she is living with Points Unknown as she never hesitates to check something out or try something unfamiliar. Zola is an excellent sled dog, being one of the very best pullers in the team and is really excelling in wheel position.

Point, Team, Wheel and some leading

Zuli

Breed: Half Bassich line/Nearly Half Hedlund with a dash of Zulu line
Birthdate: 11/27/14
Position: Point, Team, Wheel and some leading

Zuli – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for Three months, through June 2020, by Antje & Jonas Komorek of Germany/ADOPTION: Would you like to be considered to adopt Zuli?

Zuli is out of Calico’s Rayna at Points Unknown and our Arrow. Her litter is an outcross, to bring genetic diversity into the kennel and to help increase the size of our females. So far so good! The puppies in this litter of eight, have been consistently the largest we have ever had. We anticipate that she and her sister, Tikan, that also remained with Points Unknown, will be at least as big as mamma Rayna. Zuli is an absolute firecracker and is as smart as a whip. We noticed this in her even at only a few days old. Being extremely eager-to-please, she has been a joy to train in harness once we can get her to keep her feet on the ground and her tongue in her mouth and not all over your face!

Mascot

Sayah

Breed: Australian Shepherd
Birthdate: 06/24/2013
Position: Mascot

Sayah – Sponsorship Status: Sponsored for two months, through June 15th, by Jinx the Australian Shepherd mix of Crystal, Minnesota. Sponsored by Kathleen Kimball-Baker for one month through. July 15th

Sayah is Persian for “Shadow” and that she is! When looking at her puppy photos, she reminded us so much of our very first Australian Shepherd, Shadow and we fell in love with her instantly. She’s taken to her job as mascot well and takes it very seriously. She feels that it is her job to check in with every sled dog each morning and make certain she knows where they are during playgroups as she watches them from the house windows. She’s got a path from one end of the house to the other and up the stairs and back again. She’s even run on in the team with the sled dogs!  Her main job though, is to be by our sides doing whatever needs to be done around or off the homestead.
